W.C."Bud" Ritzel, Jr
Approaching retirement after 35 years in business I experienced a growing sense of imbalance in my life. I had lost inner spirituality - my place in life. I certainly never planned on a business career. I'd earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, yet never applied that training toward a career in art because, at the time, I needed immediate and steady income. And through the ups and downs of living life I began a successful career in business.
After retirement, something entered my daily life that profoundly altered my life forever - horses. A close friend, who just couldn't stand seeing an empty barn, gifted me a beautiful grey 2 year old mare that I named Lakota. Horse owners know that having horses means long days, hard work and selfless care. I never worked harder or loved the work more than I did working with horses. But one horse just never seems enough. Horse owners have an inexhaustable supply of creative reasons why they need another horse. "I need a gaited horse to ease my back pain when I ride", "My horse needs a companion", "I need an event horse". And so, over the years my gifted grey, Lakota, turned into a herd of seven.
The hard work and long days feeding, grooming, training and caring for my horses built bonds of affection, trust, understanding and communication between us. One of my most fun things is to have my lunch in the pasture among my horses, watching their communication with one another, listening to them graze and the sounds of their breathing while dozing gave me a profound appreciation of the spiritual nature of horses. And then, a seemingly random injury that ultimately provided the priceless keys to understanding and communication.*
My journey restored my own spirituality and gave me my "place" in the world. And after all the time that has passed since art school, it prompted me to finally pick up my brushes again with a renewed rush of creative energy and purpose.
Welcome to Spirit World Art, made possible by a wise and patient horse whose spirit helped me find my way back to my place in the world. Through creative expressions I try to touch and share the essence of the spirit within my subject matter. I hope in some way it may touch your spirit as well.
